CSR-Driven Leadership Development in HR Practices
Introducing
CSR in leadership development programs has become a necessity for HR
professionals who are concerned about the construction of ethical and socially
sensitive leaders. As companies in Sri Lanka wake up to the ideas of CSR,
leadership development initiatives that are driven by responsibility towards
the societies bear importance in producing leaders with visions of increasing
business and at the same time accept the responsibilities towards the society
and the environment. Incorporation of CSR concepts in leadership courses is
among the ways in which HR can be used to develop a generation of leaders with
sustainable and responsible mind-set.
Implementing
CSR into Leadership Training
A
positive approach towards the development of social responsibility leaders is
to inoculate CSR into leadership development courses. These programs can
contain the components that are financial concerns but can contain the modules
on the ethical decision making the company or institution’s environmental
responsibility, how this company or institution can help the community, how to
treat employees fairly and so on. For example, workshops that teach how to run
a sustainable business or work with ethical supply chains give leaders
information to make right choices that help society.
It
is therefore possible for Sri Lankan companies to include local CSR themes,
poverty, environmentalism or educational programs into the management
development. This is because, when approached in a manner that takes into
account regional issues, the leaders get to understand the societal problems
that the community faces and thus are in a better position to be responsible
leaders. It also means that to some extent, HR can help arrange relationships
with local NGOs or government organizations so that leaders can see how CSR
projects benefit society (Pham et al., 2023).
Promoting
Empathy and Ethical Leadership
Leadership
development ideals promoted through CSR oriented initiatives are an
organization’s ability to embrace empathy and ethical leadership. These
programs help potential leaders to think how their actions might impact not
only the firm’s profitability as well as its workers, consumers, and the whole
society. Several workshops and exercises aimed at highlighting ethical dilemmas
or at providing an environment for practicing how to solve social dilemmas
could prepare the leaders properly.
Promoting
the Active Participation of Companies to CSR
There
are also additional means through which HR can deepen and sustain CSR-focused
leadership, namely by supporting the leaders’ engagement in CSR activities.
Organizational leaders engaged in volunteer programs or community engagement
projects or even participation in environmental projects can understand the
impact of CSR implementation. To this end, the incorporation of CSR projects as
a part of leadership development makes sure that the message on the importance
of social responsibility is constantly repeated (Mansour et al., 2022).
For
example, HR could offer leadership training which includes volunteering
activities like supporting local schools, working for conservation of our
environment, or even contributing to disaster affected communities. These are
the experiences that enable the leaders to assume that CSR is the cause and
effect of personal development and therefore part of their professional
benchmark.
Conclusion
Leadership
development promoted through CSR is an innovative best practice through which
Sri Lankan firms can purposefully build leaders of character. Thus,
incorporating CSR into training, cultivating empathy and encouraging engagement
is one way in which HR can build the new generation of ‘responsible’ leaders.
These leaders not only generate profits for their companies but also improve
the welfare of the society, which produces a good impact on the rest of
society.
