Impact of CSR on Employee Performance and Productivity

CSR activities are not only worthwhile to establish a comprehensive organizational reputation but also for customer satisfaction and personnel proficiency. This is the case since whenever companies invest their energy into engaging in CSR, they ensure that the environment in business supports ethical practices, Social causes and community support. The fulfillment of CSR can have real effects on employee motivation and commitment, since they are identity that they are working for a company that operates as a socially responsible actor. In Sri Lankan context where companies are beginning to realize the importance of CSR investment survey shows several organizations have gained positive results in HR value key performance areas such as productivity and performance of employees.

CSR and Employee Motivation

There is a precedent for how employees are more productive when the company of which they are a part shows that it is interested in social and environmentally friendly practices. With CSR the notion of profit is complemented by what the company is doing for the world, therefore providing meaning to the employee’s work. For instance, organizations that operate under sustainability and ethics field, sourcing, or community welfare tend to be accepted and endorsed by employees a lot. This gives the employees the morale to work hard in order to actually help create positive feedback on society, hence they are motivated to perform better and further stick to their organizations.

Let’s look at some CSR strategies used by a Sri Lankan apparel manufacturing giant known as MAS Holdings; It has a range of CSR activities that focus on two broad areas; Environmental care and Empowerment. In its correctional projects, such as the “Eco Go Beyond”, MAS attempts at increasing the level of environmental concern among the prison population and the provision of environmentally sustainable aid. Such programs have boosted morale among employees because the staff will feel that they are working for a company that has an environmentally friendly conscience. This fit with respect to CSR values has been correlated with better retention and productivity, as well as increased workforce commitment within MAS (Sun and Yu, 2015).

Enhanced Performance Through CSR-Driven Engagement

CSR programs also lead to improved performance of its employees since it creates a healthy workplace culture. When organizations prove to their stake holders that they cherish social responsibility employees feel appreciated, and this boosts their morale and work rate. They are useful for the organization because they provide opportunities to their employees to do meaningful extra work apart from the routine work such as volunteer days, community projects, campaigns like health checks etc. These should help to prevent fatigue, improve psychological climate, increase community feeling – and all have an important effect on output.

For instance, Dialog Axiata PLC a leading telecommunication company in Sri Lanka has complied with CSR by implementing it in education sector, community improvement and supporting disaster management. By such ways, Dialog has been able to foster a sound cultural practice that ensures its employees participate in social related activities hence increasing their commitment to their work. From here, increased satisfaction among employees in the workplace has been attributed to the improvement in productivity and service which is central to the organizational operational effectiveness (Joseph, 2024).

The Role of CSR in Productivity and Innovation

A CSR-aligned culture mostly encourages creativity and innovation. When employees participate in CSR activities, they feel comfortable coming up with new ideas and take CSR responsibility on their own, because they are aware the organization cares about them. During the process of engaging in the production of solutions to problems relating to social and environment, the employees of that firm get a wider perspective of solutions that are most beneficial to the organization and thus creating ways for improvement.

Conclusion

CSR has implied positive effect for the employee performance and productivity in the Sri Lankan context particularly for those companies where CSR has been fully implemented. When companies embrace the concept of CSR and relate the programs with the employees’ personal beliefs and cultures, morale is boosted, turnover reduced and productivity increased. In a competitive business environment CSR has been found to be an effective tool for organizations which are interested in developing a loyal and hard-working workforce.
