Building Sustainable and Engaged Workforces in Sri Lanka.
What is Corporate Social Responsibility?
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a business model and concept where the corporation is also held socially accountable to its stakeholders. CSP is a method through which firms give back to the societies in which they are established, and it subsumes activities such as CSR, green sourcing, corporate citizenship, social responsibility and philanthropy. The premise is one where organizations could be seen to have management responsibilities to stakeholders beyond just the owners of company stock (Wan‐Jan, 2006).
For
this reason, CSR can help to position a company in its market, increase sales,
satisfy stakeholders, and thus contribute to its sustainable development.
Almost every organization today views CSR as crucial for corporate values to
reflect that of its clients as well as coming up with practical business
solutions.
Integrating CSR with
Employee Engagement in Sri Lanka.
Most organizations today view CSR as
a strategic tool to improve employee relations in Sri Lankan organizations. As
the corporate world aims to increase motivation and productivity of employees,
CSR programs that focus on social responsibility and community engagement are a
great source for employee satisfaction, organizational commitment and organizational
morale.
Improving Organizational Morale through Corporate Social Responsibility: The Impact of ‘Community’ Programs.
Closely related to Employee Involvement, the concept implies that staff will work enthusiastically and be proud to participate in activities that make a difference to the community such as offering educational programs, or aiding in environmental conservation, or donating to a worthy cause within the region. The target customers, on the other hand, tend to develop loyalty towards those firms that pay attention to, and invest in, the societies in which they hold operations. This is because they will have a feeling of direction that makes them work harder to attain the goal of their organization. While studying CSR in Sri Lanka, two programs that we have seen as most resonant with the employee are providing supports for education and healthcare facilities since they establish a clear link between work done and the benefit for the society.
Enhancing productivity through engaging for a purpose.
There is a high likelihood that employees will work harder when they believe their work entails fulfilling relevant CSR goals. Through CSR, staff members feel motivated and there is the development of the psychological contract which makes them work harder. For instance, environmental CSR might involve sponsoring a company to make employees donate to environmental or recycling projects and align productivity with sustainable objectives. Such endeavors are well received in Sri Lanka because the nation has a rich heritage of living in concord with nature as well as the fellow beings (Sarvaiya, 2014).
